- There has been a reported case of a patient with Alzheimer's disease in whom St. John's Wort is said to have caused a psychotic crisis. There have been 2 other similar cases in schizophrenics in remission. Also, as with antidepressants in general, St. John's Wort may cause periods of hypomania in people with bipolar disorder.
- Adverse effects associated with taking St. John's Wort are rare and generally mild: mild digestive disorders, skin allergies, fatigue, nervousness, headaches and dry mouth. Much has been made of the plant's photosensitizing action after cows and sheep grazing in fields of St. John's Wort developed excessive sensitivity to sunlight. However, 3 clinical trials have confirmed that the photosensitizing effect of St. John's Wort is non-existent at doses normally consumed.
- Risk of drug interaction. The combination of this preparation of St. John's Wort with other medicines may reduce their effectiveness. Conversely, a sudden stop taking St. John's Wort can increase the toxicity of the drugs.
- Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. This product is a nutritional supplement which should not replace a varied and balanced diet. Keep out of the reach of young children. Store away from light, heat and humidity. As with any nutritional supplement, consult a health care practitioner before consuming if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any medical condition.
